The library will soon be retiring the EagleSource web site used to find resources by subject. We will be launching LibGuides at the beginning of Summer 2013. As a result, I will begin to move the Education resources listed in Eagle Source over to LibGuides. The resources available on the “In the Know” blog will continue to be available but I will also link them to my LibGuide page. In the meantime, take a look at my LibGuide profile. I’ve listed my contact information as well as some QuickLinks related to Education. I’ve also added the Discover Education search box for those wanting to search all the Education databases at one time. If you have any questions please let me know.

Services such as the Writing Center and Academic Success Center are available to help with writing, study skills, or tutoring. Finals and Graduation

Well, we have made it through another Fall semester. Next week is Final Exam Week. Graduation is Friday, December 14. If you are still writing papers, please remember help is available at the Information Desk on the 2nd floor of the library, through our AskZach email service or via the IM Chat Service. Searching for information can be done using our Discover@GeorgiaSouthern tool. All resources are available from the library’s main website – http://library.georgiasouthern.edu. Search all Education databases at once

Have you tried to figure out which databases you need to search while completing an assignment or conducting research for your paper, thesis, specialist project, or dissertation? Well look no further. You may use the Discover@GeorgiaSouthern site but you may also search just a subset of related Education databases using this custom search box.

Discover GALILEO

Announcing Discover GALILEO, a new way to search and retrieve content from GALILEO’s hundred+ databases, digital collections, and beyond, including print materials found only in library collections. Discover GALILEO provides a single search of all of these materials and more, combining the ease and speed of a popular Internet search engine with the quality and organization of content that only a library can provide. Powered by EBSCO Discovery Service, Discover GALILEO offers a comprehensive set of research tools, including a personal research folder that allows users to easily save, cite, retrieve, and link to content.

The new Discover GALILEO service will replace the existing federated search service in the GALILEO interface on October 1, 2012, following a preview period for libraries beginning August 1 and for GALILEO users beginning August 21. Additional functionality will be made available in subsequent months.

Timeline:

1. Replacement of federated search tool in GALILEO interface (October 1, 2012).

2. Search boxes available for use on library websites (Fall 2012)

3. Library catalogs included in search results (Winter 2013; schedule to be determined)

4. Library localization (Winter and Spring 2013; schedule to be determined)

5. EBSCO AZ and LinkSource (Winter and Spring 2013 evaluation for changes July 2013)

The EBSCO Discovery Service was selected by the GALILEO Steering Committee through a process that included a Discovery Tools review committee, which worked from 2010 to present; institutional and pilot implementations in which GALILEO worked with various products in collaboration with individual libraries; and information sessions for participating libraries. As the products are subscription-based, GALILEO was able to select the product most feasible for implementation and support in the GALILEO environment in 2012, while maintaining flexibility to consider other products as they evolve over time.

New Learning Commons Librarian began August 1

Please help me in welcoming two new faculty members here at the Zach S Henderson Library. Katrina Jackson began as our Special Collections Librarian. Ruth Baker was hired to take over the responsibilities of the Learning Commons Librarian. Formerly, Ruth was a Reference/Instruction Librarian and Serials Librarian at the Community College of Philadelphia. Prior to that she worked for ISI/Thomas Scientific and Blackwell’s Book Services. Ruth has a BA in Anthropology from the University of Arizona, a MA in Archaeology from Southern Methodist University, and a MSLIS from Drexel University. She serves as the subject specialist for Chemistry, Physics, Anthropology, Sociology, & Engineering. Ruth will also serve as the liaison to SAGE (Student Alliance for a Green Earth). Fall is Fast Approaching

In a week and a half, Summer semester will be over. I hope everyone had a good term. As we wind down for the end of summer, Fall will be upon us soon. The Eagle Nation will be busy once again. As you prepare, remember if you need library research assistance we are here to help. The GALILEO password has changed and will be changing again for Fall. There are specific services available for our graduate students. I am here to help all Education majors. We’re excited about our Google-like search tool called “Discover”. You’ll hear more about our “iDiscover @ Georgia Southern” campaign very soon. We also have a new Learning Commons Librarian who will be joining the library faculty on August 1. In the meantime, please visit previous blog articles to see what’s been going on as they are still relevant. I’ll post more information about all these topics and more as we get closer to the beginning of Fall. Until then, enjoy the rest of your summer. Safe travels…

We’ve made it to the end of the semester. Final Exam Week is almost over. To all the 2012 graduates, Congratulations! Best of luck with your new jobs or graduate school entrance. For those returning for Summer school or taking a break, enjoy your time off. It’ll be time to start again very soon.
