Google-like search now available!

Posted on January 10th, 2012 in Getting Started,Library Services & Resources,Technology by Sonya Shepherd

Spring semester is upon us and I would like to take this time to tell you all about a new and exciting library resource that will streamline the research process. Our students (and perhaps faculty too!) have always asked us for a way to search for all of the library’s resources from one place like they can when searching Google. Well, we have heard you all and now we can do just that! We’ve implemented a new resource call ‘EBSCO Discovery Service’ or EDS. The EDS looks and works like all the other EBSCO databases we’re familiar with (e.g., ERIC).

The EDS allows us to have a single search box on the library’s web page so we can search the library catalog, GALILEO, Eagle Scholar, and Special Collections all at once. A new tab will soon be added to the library’s web page in order to access the EDS but in the mean time it is accessible from the 1) Zach’s News blog, 2) go directly to EDS , or 3) click ‘EDS-Beta’ under the ‘Services’ column on the library’s web page.

I will be happy to provide a demonstration on how this new resource works. This resource is also available from any mobile device or tablet (yes, there’s an app for that…) and it’s very easy to use. I want to make sure all COE faculty/staff and students (especially our online students) are aware of this exciting new resource.

Training tutorials are available.

Happy Holidays!

Posted on December 19th, 2011 in Library Services & Resources,Need Assistance? by Sonya Shepherd

Approximately 1300 students graduated on Friday December 16, 2011. I congratulate you and wish you well in your future endeavors. For all faculty/staff and students traveling for the holidays please be safe and enjoy your family and friends. We have had a successful Fall 2011. As we count down the final days of this year, we prepare for Spring 2012. January will be here before we know it.

As a reminder, the GALILEO password will be changing soon. The library has a new discovery tool to help make searching databases, the library catalog, and other library resources easier. More information about these services and resources can be found on the library’s news blog – Zach’s News.

If you need assistance we are available to help – http://library.georgiasouthern.edu.

I have been asked to serve the library in a new capacity as Library Assessment Officer. More information is available from the library’s Zach’s News blog. I will continue performing some of the Learning Commons duties until  the new Learning Commons Librarian starts (August 2012). I will also continue to serve as the liaison to the College of Education. And I will continue posting to this blog. Have a great day!
